A creative online group for vocal experimentation, self-discovery, camaraderie, empowerment, & play

For those seeking to break through perfectionistic shaping, shame, fear, silencing, & isolation through the power of the voice.

Using the creative toolkit of InterPlay, particularly its voice-centered forms, you’ll get to know yourself more intimately and witness others in their authenticity through a variety of warmups, partner exercises, small and full group playspaces on Zoom.

While singing will be a part of this group, singing is not our central or sole focus, and our time together will be centered in unpacking all narratives, "rules," and external voices that may have taught us we "can't sing," "shouldn't sing," or otherwise use our voices as the wild and free spirits we were always meant to be.

This group is born out of the myriad oppressive & repressive conditions of our world, and a deep yearning for all life to be free.

While this group welcomes & centers the experiences of BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIAP+, disabled*, chronically ill, immigrant, youth, elderly, & intersectionally oppressed peoples, the space is open to people of all identities who will co-sign the intention to witness, honor, & connect across differences as an act of resistance to all forms of domination & supremacy.

All ages are welcome to participate, though the space is designed with adults and teens 17+ in mind. (If you have questions about the potential participation of youth younger than this, please reach out to me!)

clear as a bell: I want in!

"Ring the bells that still can ring, Forget your perfect offering,

There is a crack in everything, That's how the light gets in."

-Leonard Cohen,“Anthem”

In service of collective liberation, our bodies & VOICES NEED TO GET FREE.

How will we do this??

  • By flexing our vocal chords as energy-moving muscles that help us stir stagnation, break through barriers, & shatter "shoulds" & "shouldn'ts"

  • By loosening up our sounds, speech, stories, & songs

  • By granting ourselves permission to "have" our vocal abilities for the sake of our aliveness, humanity, & embodiment

  • By claiming our truths & power, intentions & visions, hopes, prayers, & dreams by naming them aloud

  • By courageously allowing ourselves to be seen & heard

  • By witnessing others & growing community connections through play

  • By "looking for the good" as we seek to affirm & support one another in the space

  • By growing consciousness of our body wisdom, playing our way to "aha!" moments, inner knowings, & perhaps even spiritual awakenings

  • Through snatches of silliness and fun ;)

  • Through the InterPlay Community Practices

ring ring: this sounds like my calling

Through freeing up our voices, we truly get freer. Here, we do so together.

Why is this so necessary in these times?

This moment needs us whole, resourced, & in our right-sized power to be able to fight back against fascism & dismantle oppression of all kinds, while surviving unnatural disasters like climate catastrophe.

The violent, dehumanizing, false narratives that we do not or should not exist are claiming too many lives. Some of us are coming from trauma lineages or lived experiences where ancestors, or we ourselves, literally had to keep quiet to survive, and as a result, our voices are stuck in our throats. Now is a BIG moment where we need to speak up! For ourselves, for others, against injustice anywhere and everywhere, we must not stay silent out of fear. Isolation and loneliness have got many of us unwittingly carrying out the work of our oppressors for them.

While these subjects & times are heavy, we get to practice breaking our own silence in a supportive, affirming environment where we lean towards connection and build new community with levity and play.

It's ringing true: i'd love to be a part of this!

"and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
but when we are silent
we are still afraid

So it is better to speak
remembering

we were never meant to survive."

-audre lorde, "A litany for survival"

FAQs

  • InterPlay is a creative, engaged way to unlock the wisdom of the body, claiming sound, silence, story, song, movement, dance, stillness, witnessing, and affirmation as the birthright practices of all people. It doesn't promise healing, though many have found it can aid or facilitate breakthroughs on one’s healing journey. InterPlay's intention is to offer a toolkit for in-the-moment creation, reflection, and uplifting the good. Play supports us coming home to ourselves in all our abilities, limits, and “body deals.”

InterPlay meets us where we're at; we don't have to be feeling happy or any particular way to play. We come as we are and we play with what's present. Everything we do is by invitation--you get to decline anything that’s not right for you. If you're on the fence, here are some questions that might help you decide if you want to give InterPlay a try.

  • This group is for anyone who wants to play with their vocal capabilities in an experimental, fun, low-or-no-pressure way. You do not have to have ANY formal experience with singing or vocal training. You may have been told you have a “terrible voice” (shame on whoever told you that!) or a “great voice” (something we really all deserve to be told more). This group is for everybody ready to break out of the boxes that have defined or confined our voices… through play!

While this group welcomes & centers the experiences of BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIAP+, disabled, chronically ill, immigrant, youthful, elderly, & intersectionally oppressed peoples, the space is open to people of all identities who will co-sign the intention to witness, honor, & connect across differences as an act of resistance to all forms of domination & supremacy. All ages are welcome to participate, though the space is designed with adults and teens 17+ in mind. (If you have questions about the potential participation of youth younger than this, please reach out to me!)

  • Sessions will be led in English. While translation will unfortunately not be provided for this round of the group, use of other languages in the space is welcome! Closed captioning will be enabled.

We may or may not take a 5 minute break midway through sessions, though you are always welcome to tend to your body & relationships, dependents, etc. as needed throughout our time together (e.g. going off camera, stimming, fidgeting, stretching, moving your body at a time when everyone else appears still, using the bathroom off-cam, eating food, nursing a child or tending to children, letting your dog out/cat in, etc).

When doing movement-based activities, a few options will be given for ways to participate, which will always include doing the practice in your imagination if your bodyspirit is not able to or interested in doing it physically. You will always have the option to decline a practice invitation(s) as well. As a facilitator, I do my best to offer suggestions for a variety of bodies & access needs. Please email me at playfullythriving@gmail.com if you have any other access questions or indicate on the sign-up form if there is anything you want me to be aware of.

For folks who are deaf or hard of hearing, you are seen. Though ASL interpretation will not be available for this round of the group, it is my intention to continue to expand this work in the direction of all who want to participate in it. If you would be interested in a future edition of this group with ASL available, please drop me a line and know I am actively exploring it!

  • So much yes!!!!

  • I sure hope so! ;) The purpose of this space is not to improve our voices or learn new music, though it’s possible you might pick up a new song or two. While it’s possible you’ll have experienced some vocal warmups and activities like the ones we’ll do together, so much of what makes the InterPlay experience unique is in the connections we make between our bodymindheartspirits as we go, and between each other! No matter what level of experience or training you have, including with InterPlay, time and again I’ve experienced the power of the InterPlay toolkit to unlock new insights, feelings, and profound joy for folks. If for nothing other than fun, I highly suggest you try it!

  • This is a great question! While there are some challenges of working with the digital platform, there are actually some benefits, as well as some InterPlay practices that support us in orienting to this question. For one, some of the time we’ll just be making noise for ourselves, i.e. microphones off in the group, parallel playing in our respective living rooms. Other times, we may go back and forth with a partner, or in the big group, using our voices at separate times so there’s no overlap. During times where we will play with making sounds, toning, or singing all together, it can get a little choppy, distorted, even chaotic! This is where the InterPlay tools of “Easy Focus” and “Physicality of Grace” come in. We’ll talk more about these concepts in group, but in short, these are moments where we get to practice taking things less seriously, noticing if that’s easier or harder for us, & affirming our experience either way as one we can learn from. Yes, there are some Zoom settings we’ll enable like “original sound for musicians” to support our audio experiences, & sometimes, there may still be technical difficulties. When they arise, we’ll try to approach them with levity, maybe even mischief ;)

  • No, not this one. While some of my other courses are recorded, this one is more of an experience than a training, and much of what we’ll be experiencing has a “real-time” necessitated component to it. If you’re wanting to come but think you’ll miss a session or two, you’re welcome to factor that into the total you choose along the sliding scale.

Ok, but how much is it?

This group is offered on a sliding scale.
If you can pay higher on the scale, please do, and know that in so doing, you are ensuring this work remains accessible to a wider range of participants & sustainable for me as a practitioner. If you can pay less, please know you are equally welcomed and held in high regard, regardless of the size of your contribution.

Payment Plans

You are welcome to develop and follow your own self-accountable payment plan, or send funds in multiple parts at any pace/frequency/rhythm that works for you. I ask that all plans be completed by the date of our final gathering, December 16th.

True Cost & Sliding Scale Guidelines
In a world where all had the same access to money, the true cost of this group would be $250 per person. One day, in a world after capitalism, this group will be free! As we are sadly not there yet, I ask you to consider the following scale from as honest and grounded of a place as you can. Please note the tier descriptions below are much abbreviated.
Full sliding scale guidelines are here.

Tier 1: $60-90 I struggle to meet my basic needs & the true cost of this course would be a hardship for me

Tier 2: $95-200 I can meet my basic needs but have little expendable income; paying for this class may mean sacrificing other non-essential spending

Tier 3: $205-300
I am able to meet my basic needs & I have a modest financial safety net

Tier 4: $305-450
My basic needs & beyond are comfortably met & I have a significant financial safety net

Ok, You can ring my bell...

Things people have said about the way Leroy holds space

  • "The spaciousness you make, the care that you bring, the permission you give, the consent, the stories you tell, your presence & modeling... thank you."

  • "Your passion, inquisitive mind, and care really shine through in all that you do."

  • "Authentic, fresh, aligned, original, fun, fearless."

  • “This is the first improv-y thing I've ever done that has had any amount of being accessible to me, and that means a lot. All my other experiences with improv type stuff have been overwhelming and put me on the spot all the time, and I quit those after one attempt because it was so stressful. I *really* appreciate that this managed to *not* do that, even if I still had to sit out a lot of the time. The fact that sitting out was not only OK but encouraged if that's where I was at really meant a lot.”

  • “Thank you for being a very important support and inspiration in my journey through the underworld to get my voice back.”

  • “Leroy is a very gifted facilitator. Their playfulness is inspiring and helped me feel comfortable unmasking and opening up in a group setting. I trusted their leadership because it was clear they gave a lot of care and attention to accessibility, safety, and choice. Their confidence and clarity as a facilitator was refreshing and I would definitely recommend any workshops or classes with Leroy!”
